Kalibo Save the Mangroves Association (KASAMA)

Community-led mangrove restoration association in Aklan; operates the 220-hectare Bakhawan Eco-Park, one of the country's most successful community mangrove projects.

The Kalibo Save the Mangroves Association (KASAMA) is a community-led mangrove planters' organisation based in Kalibo, Aklan. KASAMA established the Bakhawan Eco-Park in 1990 jointly with the local government, beginning with a 50-hectare planting on the silted Kalibo coastline. Thirty-five years on, the forest has expanded to approximately 220 hectares and is widely cited as the most successful community-led mangrove restoration in the Philippines. The forest absorbed the brunt of Typhoon Fengshen (2008) and Typhoon Haiyan (2013), sparing nearby villages from storm-surge damage that flattened communities elsewhere on Panay Island. KASAMA continues to expand the planted area, maintain monitoring transects, and host visiting researchers and schoolchildren.
